Close to home (Ottawa home)

Hello All,

This is a LONG overdue post for all the restaurants I’ve been to for the past.. month LOL! And then I have to do a montreal post on all the montreal goodies ^_^. Well, first up.. FOOD!

The Manx

We were going to head to “Town” that evening, since both my roommate and I got paid that week, but when we called in to make reservations.. turns out the whole place was booked full. Our second choice was ‘The Manx’, seeing as it was located literally right in front of my apartment and I’ve heard so many good reviews for it.

Decor/Atmosphere:
Small, dim lights, and small tables – definitely a bar/pub like setting. There were tall tables, and there where shorter/smaller tables, and all the tables were pretty close to each other, but it was not so close that there was no elbow room. We were seated at the side, near a corner, and I found it was a nice place to sit since it was in the corner and slightly seperated from the rest of the restaurant. Overall, the restaurant gave off a very relaxed, and chill spot. The only thing I would complain about this would be the doorway- VERY tiny doorway, hardly enough room for one person to pass through. So it was annoying when someone was coming out of the restaurant and we were trying to get in.. we were sorta left.. stuck in between the doorway. LOL.

Food:
I ordered the pulled pork wrap, and both my friends ordered the lamb curry wrap. I didn’t actually get to try any of my friend’s wraps, but they both said it was amazing, but too much, so they couldn’t finish their plates. I, on the other hand, ate the whole of my pulled pork wrap, AND the fries- feel so proud of myself ^_^ Well, my take on the food: The food was definitely not bad, the pulled pork a bit on the dry side, but the wrap was none-the-less good. What I REALLY liked though, were the fries/potatoe wedges. They were amaaazinng! Soo yummy (: Nice and thickly cut, fried, definitely my favourite part of the meal.

Service:
Service, I’d say, was nice. The guy that served us always had a smile on his face, was quick when taking our orders, and was quick to deliver our orders. Again, nothing special, but service was quick and courteous!

Pancho Villa

This Place was ranked second best Mexican food on urban spoon, but I actually paid them a vist after recieving a recommendation from my roommate. This place is also VERY close to my house, and I just didn’t feel like cooking one day, so I ordered take out from this place. I’ve actually been here twice, but both times were take-out, so I can’t really comment on the service.

Decor/Atmosphere:
Again, like most places I’ve been to in Ottawa.. this place was very dimly lit and had a sort of “mystic” feeling to it. Not overly loud, and generally quite.. quiet, it felt sort of homey, while I was waiting on my food. The place is pretty big, so plenty of room for guests, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen it full.

Food:
I’ve never tried authentic mexican food before (besides taco bell.. which.. isn’t even authentic LOL) So this was my first time trying it. First time I ordered The Pancho special, which came with 3 enchiladas, beans and guacamole. I found the enchilada’s to be a bit hard to eat, and the tortilla was a bit too hard for my tastes. The guacamole and beans were good – I really liked the beans, and I don’t normally eat/like beans at all. But what I REALLY liked about this place was their hot sauce- a greenish chunky sauce that had a particular spicy tinge to it. Don’t know if they make their own sauce or not.. but everytime I go , I make sure to ask for it!

Service:
Cannot comment on this (: Since I do take-out, but everytime I go, the bartender (who is also the guy that takes our take-out orders) is SUPER nice and friendly and has a great smile! So for the bartender, I give him a 5/5 !

Last but not least..
Koreana:
K-bbq place 😀

Decor/Atmosphere:
Nice and roomy, comfy seats, small tables, and tables with bbq plates that they didn’t even use. LOL. Not much decorations around the place, just looked pretty plain. We sat downstairs, and there wasn’t too much smoke around the place, but there is also an upper level where there are more seats and where the washroom is. I went upstairs to use the washroom, and was immediately overwhelmed by smoke – so definitely sit downstairs if you want to avoid smoke!

Food:
Definitely, NOTHING compared to Toronto. Even the worst K-bbq place in Toronto is better than this one. The beef was marinated the worse- did not even taste like it was marinated in bulgogi sauce- just tasted like soy sauce marination AND the beef was not fresh.. AT ALL. The pork/chicken weren’t bad though, but still not comparable to Toronto.

The salmon sushi was .. ofcourse not the best, but it was alright, the salmon was too thickly cut. The bibimbap was pretty good, but not all of our bulgogi came in stone bowls, but I’m not too picky about that, since some Korean restaurants in Toronto charge extra for stone bowl bibimbap. (I’m also pretty impressed that they served bibimbap at an AYCE place)The appetizers were alright, though.. one of our cold dishes weren’t..the right colour..

Service:
HORRIBLE. We had to ask them 4 times to get an extra pair of tongs, the guy was super rude to us, and they forgot a lot of our orders. No smiles, did not even bother to try to communicate with us, he looked like he was pissed off at us for being there and spending money at the restaurant. Definitely horrible, horrendous service.

That is all for now,
Really tired, but post more tomorrow!
